Architectural design competitions in the Philippines are few come far in between. BluPrint Magazine’s AVID 2012 mark my first attempt in joining a national competition. While the attempt was unsuccessful, it was a great way to flex my creative muscles. Absolutely no regrets.
The brief called for a Visitor Pitstop for a UNESCO World Heritage Site of the entrant’s own choosing and designing a complete architectural program to support the visitors and preserve the site. The choice for Santa Maria church in Ilocos Sur was an easy decision because of the site’s theatrical quality that I have always find fascinating.
The solution I proposed is a modern shed structure to be kept open for access and transparent to reduce visual bulk. As a project that bridges the old and the new, I chose to use contrast to relate the facility Im proposing to the site it serves.
